Sisyphos outwitted Death. Zeus, being wroth with him for betraying the former’s intrigue with Aigina, sent Death to fetch him. Sisyphos somehow deceived Death and bound him; released by Ares, Death tried again with more success, but Sisyphos lived long enough to direct his wife Merope to cast out his body unburied. Hades, on hearing of such impiety, allowed him to go back to earth until he should have punished Merope. Once alive again, he carefully refrained from doing any such thing, and so apparently lived on till he died of sheer old age.
